$17 billion in taxpayer money. money intended to helel the unemployed. tonight, abc's jon karl investigates. >> reporter: florida resident robin dekle was behind bars for violating parole on a drug charge but that's when authorities say she got more than $5,000 in unemployment checks last year. when she got out, florida officials say she blew that taxpayer cash on a trip to orlando and universal studios. and that may be the tip of the iceberg. over the past year, more than 1 out of every $10 the federal government dolled out in unemployment benefits, nearly $17 billion in all, went to people who should not be getting them. some jailbirds. most of them people who kept collectiti checks even after they landed a job. it's especially infuriating to those who play by the rules. >> i know times are hard for everybody, but people who go through the process, i'm -- you're legally trying to do the right thing, it's a hassle enough. and to find this out makes you want to, you know -- >> it's taxpayer money. so, we take it very seriously. and we are activity and energetically putting plan

and republicans seem no closer to a deal. abc's jon karl is covering it from capitol hill. we are seeing fire from the house speaker. >> reporter: we sure are. this vote today on his debt ceiling plan is the highest-stakes vote of his term as speaker of the house, and he is doing everything he can to get those tea partyers in line. john boehner is now demanding republicans stand with their party. in a closed door meeting he had a stern message for tea partyers who just don't like his debt ceiling plan. boehner told them get your ass in line. sources at the meeting tell abc news, a day after another republican leader attempted to rally the troops with a clip from the movie "the town." >> i need your help. i can't tell you what it is. you can never ask me about it later and we're going to hurt some people. >> which car are we going to ta take? >> reporter: allen west liked what he heard. >> i told him i would drive the car. >> they could have used "rudy," "hoosiers," "band of brothers" but this is the movie they decided on. >> reporter: maybe they can use a clip from "meatballs." >> it just doesn't
. abc's jon karl joins us from washington. all talks secret up until now. what more do we know about what president obama and the speaker of the house have been discussing. >> reporter: a big deal here, george. as you mentioned, this would mean that the president would go along with reductions in spending to social security and medicare, most likely cost of living increases going down and in exchange republicans would accept some increase in tax revenues as part of an overhaul of the tax code. as one top administration told me, we need to do something unthinkable on entitlements. they need to do something unthinkable on tacks. >> unthinkable may be the word. these talks have been going on between the president and speaker boehner but there hasn't been a lot of discussion among a wider conferences in the house and the senate democrats and republicans and i guess the big question coming out of today's meeting, when other leaders find out about it, is it something they can work with and is it something that will fly? >> reporter: a great question. boehner and the president may be able t
